Explosive Arrows

by Stuart Jones

Weapon Cost Damage Critical Range Weight Type
   Explosive Arrows 40 gp * x4 1/2 6 Piercing and Bludgeoning

These arrows/ bolts are made of either hollowed out wood or metal. These arrows/bolts are more destructive than normal types of arrows. The power of the explosion depends upon the driving force ehind the arrow. The explosive damage is triggered by a piezo electric crystal which is mounted on the tip of the arrow. The connectors that deliver the charge to the explosives are usually disconnected when purchased as to stop the detonation of the weapon if accidentally dropped. As well as the instability during flight the arrows/bolts weight halves the range increments of the weapons. The bolts/arrows can be bought almost anywhere as long as the money is at hand. Because of the noise and the shock of these terrifying weapons anyone who is hit by the arrows/bolts must take a Will save or be stunned for a round. The explosive nature of these arrows makes the wounds difficult to heal. The victim continues to take a point of damage every round until a successful heal check is made or magical healing is received. Unlike normal weapons, when a critical hit is rolled, the bonus damage is multiplied, not the base weapon damage.

Explosive arrows and bolts halve the range increment for any weapon they are fired from. In addition, the impose a –2 circumstance penalty to hit due to their abnormal weight. Explosive arrows for short bows and hand crossbows inflict +1d6 damage on a successful hit. Theses arrows require a Will save (DC 15).

Longbow and light crossbow arrows/ bolts inflict +1d8 bonus damage and force a Will save (DC 16). Heavy crossbow bolts and Composite bows inflict +1d10 points of bonus damage and require a Will save (DC 17).

Master crafted versions can cost 5X the normal amount for 20. This negates one of the penalties to miss (eg. A master crafted heavy crossbow bolt would only have a -1 to hit).
