Blazer

Edition:  l  AD&D 2e  l  D&D 3.5  l  D&D 5e  l

The original 2nd Edition entry from the Forge.

Blazer is a scimitar of unknown origins. It is indistinguishable from any other magical blade. Its blade is made of silver and the handle is trimmed in platinum. A single ruby the size of a quarter is set into the hilt of the sword. It is currently in the possesion of Valas Veladorn who has carried for some twenty years. His exploits of speed and agility in combat have become legend in the North. He recieved the scimitar from a druid who passsed it on to him with his last dying breath. The druid, who's name is unknown, was buried by Valas in a stone cairn on the southern tip of the Aunaroch Desert.

Blazer acts in many ways like a Scimitar of speed. It has a +3 bonus to hit and damage. The blade grants the wielder an automatic first attack every round. In addition, the sword confers a -2 bonus to the initiative role. The blade also increases the wielders number of attacks by one level. If, for instance a fighter had 3 attacks every 2 rounds, with Blazer he would have 2 attacks every round. The most unique feature of Blazer is its ability to attune itself to its yielder. Anyone other than the rightful owner of the weapon that attempts to pick up the weapon recieves 1d8 points of damage per round until the sword is dropped. The sword may only change hands if it is freely given by the owner or if the owner of the weapon dies.

Provisional conversion, awaiting review by DamienRahl.

Blazer (3.5)

A silver-bladed scimitar with a platinum-trimmed hilt and a single large ruby. Its history is on the 2nd Edition tab.

Blazer is a +3 speed scimitar. When its wielder makes a full attack, he gets one extra attack at his full base attack bonus. It also grants a +2 bonus on initiative checks.

Owner-bound: Blazer attunes itself to its rightful owner. Anyone else who picks it up takes 1d8 points of damage each round until they drop it. It changes hands only if the owner freely gives it away or dies.

Caster Level: 7th; Prerequisites: Craft Magic Arms and Armor, haste; Market Price: 72,315 gp; Weight: 4 lb.

Conversion notes (how conversions are made):

  • The 2e extra attack "one level" up becomes the standard speed property, and its −2 initiative modifier becomes a +2 bonus on initiative checks.
  • The site's 3e section had a Blazer page that repeated the 2e text with no 3e rules; that page now points here.
  • Market price counts Blazer as a +6 weapon (+3 and speed); the initiative bonus and owner binding aren't priced separately.

Provisional conversion, awaiting review by DamienRahl.

Blazer (5e)

Weapon (scimitar), very rare (requires attunement)

A silver-bladed scimitar with a platinum-trimmed hilt and a single large ruby. Its history is on the 2nd Edition tab.

You have a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon, and a +2 bonus to initiative while it's on your person. When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can make one attack with it as a bonus action.

Owner-bound. A creature other than the scimitar's attuned owner that picks it up takes 1d8 force damage at the start of each of its turns until it lets go, unless the owner freely gave it the sword or has died.

Conversion notes (how conversions are made):

  • The bonus-action attack follows the scimitar of speed from the 5e Dungeon Master's Guide.
  • The owner-bound damage type (force) is new to this conversion; the 2e entry doesn't give one.
