Mana Bladeby Citadelraven.com
Edition: l AD&D 2e l D&D 3e (original) l The original 2nd Edition entry from the Forge, where it was called “Force Blade”. The name Force Blade is a misnomer in several ways. First of all, there are also force axes, spears, staves, knives and maces not just swords. Secondly the nominclature 'force' is decieving. They should be more appropriately called magical force, for these weapons are composed of the magical weave itself. These weapons are created and used by the Knights of Mystra. A force blade appears to be a tube flowing light and energy that hums slightly. The shape of the blade will vary from weapon to weapon. The handles of such weapons are the only solid portion and may be of plain design or have intricate carvings. The size and shape of the handles depends largely on the weapon being imitated. The weapon is used to channel the weave of magic and form it into a weapon. A force blade inflicts 1d6 pts of bludgeoning damage +1/lvl of the wielder. A Knight of Mystra does not recieve damage bonues from high strength or specialization but may benefit from attack bonuses, he can, at will, hold back the added damage. Anyone struck by the blade must make a save vs. paralyzation with a +2 bonus or be stunned for 1d4 rounds. The blade is a solid manifestation of the weave and can hit any creature that would normally require a magical weapon to hit inflicting triple damage.
The most devastating effects of this weapon are on magic. When 'ignited,' the blades of these weapons literally suck the weave into themselves in order to become tangible. In essence, the swords create dead magic zones that negate any and all spells passing through them. Magic items will temporarily lose their enchantments, maintained spells will instantly end. This means that when attacking, a Knight of Mystra ignores all benefits from magical protection including spells, armor, rings, bracers and cloaks; although magical armor still acts as normal armor without bonuses. They also in essence grant the wielder 100% magic resistance. The dead magic zone is shaped like a sphere its size depends on the size of the weapon being formed.
