Silver Vein

Edition:  l  D&D 3e (original)  l

Originally posted on the Realms of Evil forums (Womb of Creation), November 1, 2001. Changes the author made later in the thread are applied and listed at the end. Shown as written, with light spelling and formatting fixes only.

This weapon looks like a 2 ft. long, thin silver wire with two iron rings attached to both its ends. The item can be carried around as a simple double ring on the hand. One of the rings is hollow and has a small button on its top which, when pressed, pulls the whole wire into itself, acting as a container.

The real use of this weapon is for quick and clean assassination. The assassin holds one ring in each hand and pulls them apart. They extend to a 2 ft. distance, with the thin wire holding them strongly together. This weapon's best use is on a victim's bare neck. If the assassin puts in enough effort and manages to strangle the victim for two rounds, the victim's head will eventually fall off.

The weapon has no effect against victims with metal protection around their necks. Leather neck protection only prolongs the decapitation: for each AC bonus point that the leather armor provides, add one round to the base 2 rounds needed to decapitate the victim.

In addition to all this, the assassin can poison or disease the wire in case the victim escapes before being decapitated.

Caster Level: -; Prerequisites: Craft Magic Arms and Armor, keen edge, death spell; Market Price: 10,050 gp.

Author's Notes and Corrections

  • Reply #2 (November 1, 2001): the author said the description was changed to a thin wire, and added that the weapon has no effect against metal neck protection while leather neck armor adds one round per point of AC bonus. That rule is the third paragraph.
