Spyglass of Seeing

Spyglass of Seeing

Edition:  l  AD&D 2e  l  D&D 3e (original)  l  D&D 3.5  l  D&D 5e  l

The original 2nd Edition entry from the Forge.

The Spyglass of Seeing is a valuable item aboard any ship. The Spyglass allows the user to see double the normal distance during daytime. In addition, it negates the vision penalties of fog and darkness. A sailor facing these conditions can see normally as if it were a clear sunny day.

The Spyglass itself is gold plated although extremely light and durable. The eyepiece is carved with intricate runes. The spyglass is typically stored in a leather or wooden case. For more about the Spyglass of Seeing and its owner, visit Pommel in the Hall of Heroes.

Caster Level: 3rd; Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, true seeing; Market Price: 24,640 gp; Weight: 3 lb.

Provisional conversion, awaiting review by DamienRahl.

Spyglass of Seeing (3.5)

A light, durable gold-plated spyglass with runes carved around the eyepiece. Its history is on the 2nd Edition tab.

While looking through the spyglass, the user can see twice as far as normal in daylight (halve the distance penalty on Spot checks) and sees through darkness as if with darkvision out to 120 feet. Fog, mist and smoke don't give concealment from the user.

Caster Level: 3rd; Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, darkvision; Market Price: 12,000 gp; Weight: 1 lb.

Conversion notes (how conversions are made):

  • The 3e original used true seeing at caster level 3rd, but that spell needs a 9th-level caster and does far more than the spyglass. This version uses darkvision, which matches its effect; the price is recalculated for that spell (2,000 gp × spell level 2 × caster level 3).
  • Seeing through fog and smoke has no spell of its own; it's included without extra cost.
  • A spyglass weighs 1 lb. in 3.5, not 3 lb.

Provisional conversion, awaiting review by DamienRahl.

Spyglass of Seeing (5e)

Wondrous item, uncommon

A light, durable gold-plated spyglass with runes carved around the eyepiece. Its history is on the 2nd Edition tab.

While looking through this spyglass, you can see twice as far as normal in daylight, and fog, smoke and nonmagical darkness don't obscure your view.

Conversion notes (how conversions are made):

  • Written for 5e from the 2e entry; its rarity follows similar vision items such as goggles of night.
