Sniping Scope

Edition:  l  D&D 3e (original)  l

Originally posted on the Realms of Evil forums (Womb of Creation), November 21, 2001. The author did not name an edition; it is filed under D&D 3e by its rules. This page uses the author's revised version (November 22, 2001), with the price he settled on later in the thread. Changes the author made later in the thread are applied and listed at the end. Shown as written, with light spelling and formatting fixes only.

Sniping Scope (masterwork item)

This item is made of specially crafted lenses mounted in a metal tube. The tube includes a clipping mechanism that enables it to be mounted on any type of crossbow except the hand crossbow, which is too small.

When aiming through the scope, you suffer no penalties to attack rolls for distances up to 4 times the range increment, and you can make sneak attacks up to a distance of 120 feet. Note that the crossbow's range increment doesn't change.

Cost: Varies, as it must be crafted on demand, but it should not be less than 5,000 gp.

Author's Notes and Corrections

  • Reply #15 (December 5, 2001): the author said he intended "pricing it at no less than 5000 GP so that low level characters can't get their hands on this." The posted minimum of 2,500 gp is raised to 5,000 gp.
