Great Cleave: Each time he drops a foe, he can make an extra attack against another foe within reach, with no limit per round.
Improved Trip: A glaive can be used to trip. When he trips a foe, he gets an immediate melee attack against it.
Combat Reflexes: With a reach weapon he threatens a ring 10 feet away, and can make up to four attacks of opportunity a round.
Leadership: Yomas Luur is his cohort; the warriors he trains at Jorhat Citadel are his followers.

Yuri Sh'lu: A +2 glaive. Its other powers are carried over from 2nd Edition: on command it changes into any other polearm (such as a guisarme, halberd, longspear or ranseur), keeping its bonus, and its weapon damage dice are doubled in every form (2d10 as a glaive, included above).

Possessions: Yuri Sh'lu, +3 scale mail of Eastern design, +1 composite shortbow (+4 Str bonus) with 20 arrows, insulated pot helm.

Conversion notes (how conversions are made):

  • His 2e Fighter 25 becomes Fighter 25 under the Epic Level Handbook. His base attack bonus is +20 plus a +2 epic attack bonus, and his saves include a +2 epic save bonus.
  • His 18/05 Strength becomes 19.
  • Grand mastery of the glaive becomes the Weapon Focus and Weapon Specialization feats, their Greater and Epic versions, and Improved Critical. 3.5 has no feat for specializing in every polearm, so his skill with the others comes from fighter proficiency alone. Two-handed weapon style becomes Power Attack, Cleave and Great Cleave.
  • His scale mail +3 becomes +3 scale mail; his AC comes to 20, the same as his 2e entry.
  • His Tuigan service, Riding and Tactics proficiencies become the mounted feats and Ride. Etiquette and court intrigue become Diplomacy and Sense Motive, Dancing becomes Perform (dance), and Seamanship and Sailing become Profession (sailor). His 2e Tuigan kit has no 3.5 equivalent.
  • Changing shape and double damage aren't 3.5 weapon properties, so Yuri Sh'lu's powers are carried over from 2e.

Possessions: Yuri Sh'lu, +3 scale mail of Eastern design, +1 shortbow with 20 arrows, insulated pot helm, dice set.

Conversion notes (how conversions are made):

  • His 2e Fighter 25 is built as a 20th-level Samurai (Xanathar's Guide to Everything), with a +6 proficiency bonus. Legendary Resistance and legendary actions stand in for his other five levels; they are new to this conversion.
  • Samurai suits a warrior raised in Wa who moves easily in courts: Elegant Courtier covers his Etiquette proficiency, and he takes Performance (his Dancing) as its bonus skill.
  • His seven Ability Score Improvements all go to feats, so his ability scores stay as in his 2e entry. Polearm Master, Great Weapon Master and the Great Weapon Fighting style cover his glaive mastery and two-handed weapon style; Mounted Combatant his Tuigan cavalry service; Martial Adept and Inspiring Leader his Tactics and his training of warriors.
  • The Mercenary Veteran background (Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide) reflects his years leading mercenaries in the Tuigan war. His Seamanship and Sailing proficiencies aren't converted.
  • His +3 scale mail keeps his Dexterity bonus at +2, so his AC is 19.
  • 5e has no shape-changing or double-damage weapon property, so Yuri Sh'lu's powers are carried over from 2e. Its shapes are limited to the 5e weapons that work with Polearm Master.

Description: Nogi Khan is a small warrior of oriental heritage. He has intense brown eyes and fine dark hair worn short. He sports a thin moustache of the same dark hair and a small goatee. He seems to have the same enduring frown of many of the Easterners. He is well muscled for his smaller frame and handles his glaive with deadly ease. He is almost always in armor preferring to let all know that he is a warrior. He wears scale mail of oriental designs with an insulated pot helm. He carries a composite shortbow across his back and keeps his magical polearm Yuri Sh'lu within easy reach.

Personality: Nogi Khan is quite and calm. He understands well the courts and political intrigues that shape countries and plays the game to maintain his position. He is a brilliant strategist and a cunning warrior. It is only during combat when Nogi's calm visage slips that he becomes and intense destructive felling his opponents by the score. He has a deep sense of honor about him and like the monks under which he studied, Nogi acknowledges ability over station. He is a difficult task master expecting perfection from day one.

Game Uses: Nogi Khan has placed himself in a comforatble position. He is a good friend of the captain of the guard of the Jorhat Citadel located along the Old Iron Road, one of the primary trading routes from the East. His friendship has allowed him to establish contracts with the Citadel to train its warriors. The position suites him well for news of his abilities brings students from both directions. He is quite the entrepenuer and has set up his personal home as a complete training center maintaining only a small loft as his own, were he sleeps. He readily welcomes students. He relishes the control that this brings and exerts himself as a difficult taskmaster often punishing mistakes with physical retaliation. Because of the uniqueness of his specilization, Nogi charges exhorbant amounts of money for his training. His fee is 175 gp/ week. He expects complete dedication from his students. He is known to use torure to test his students under pressure and with few exceptions, expects them to remain in his small home until their training is complete.

History: Nogi was born in the small fishing village of Kurahito in the Islands of Wa. He spent a great deal of his youth spear fishing in the mountain streams and taking fishing trips out to sea with his father. While Nogi's father was an excellent fisherman, he was also a gambling addict. On a fateful trip to sea, his creditors came calling sinking his ship killing him and taking young Nogi as a slave. As fate would have it, the ship never made safe dock. It was caught in a violent squall and tossed upon the rocks. Nogi barely escaped with his life. He stumbled into the wilderness wielding a gangly looking spear and fearing that the slavers might track him.

Nogi's luck did not hold for long. After traveling for two days directly inland, Nogi came face to face with an orc. The brutish beast set upon Nogi immediately. Nogi defended himself fiercely and was able to use the creatures overconfidence against; impaling him upon the spear. Nogi scavanged the orcs gear and set off deeper into the wilderness. After nearly a month in the country side, Nogi came upon his first sign of other humans, a small caravan led by priests was clearly visible from his vantage point. With nothing to lose, he approached the monks and beged fro their help. Tul' the senior monk amongst the caravan took pity upon the boy and offered to take the boy into their monastery provided he performed the duties that were requested of him. With no other promising choices, Nogi agreed to the terms.

Nogi could not have been any luckier. The monks he lived among were friendly and the tasks they gave him were none too difficult. He learned a great deal from them including written languages and numbers. Among the monks, was Nogi's first training in the use of polearms and in particular a unique style of glaive favored by the monks. After nearly ten years living with the monks, Nogi left, feeling he had learned all that he could and responding to the anxious desire for a life more exciting than within the walls of the monastery. Nogi travelled to the North responding to news of war and a call for mercenaries. His journey took him several months. Along the way, he joined up with a mercenary band also responding to the call to war. Soon after joining the group, Nogi rose to second in command exerting his power with the skilled use of his glaive.

Nogi and the other mercenaries arrived in the Hordelands home of the Tuigan. They were assigned ranks among the armies and sent forth with the main host. Thru tact and guile, Nogi rose in rank in the army showcasing his mastery of tactics and backing it up with his unbeatable skill. Despite the eventual defeat of the armies, Nogi survived and travelled South with fifty fierce Tuigan warriors under his command. He placed Yomas, a trusted friend from the war as second in command. They raided and pillaged several small hamlets along the way to feed themselves. Their actions caught the attention of another marauder in the area, Tol Huurikan, a fierce ogre mage. Tol saw Nogi and his men as potential allies against the citizens of Jorhat Citadel. He had made it his lifelong campaign to sack the citadel and assume rulership. Tol sent messengers to Nogi's group and the two leaders struck a tentative agreement. Tol gave Nogi Yuri Sh'lu, the magical polearm as a sign of good faith. Nogi took the gift willingly and then led his troops towards the city. The were to enter the city and make sure the gates were opened wide when Tol struck with his force of ogre, giants and orcs.

Nogi had every intention of completing his task until he walked within the walls of the Citadel and tasted true civilization for the first time in five years. His en felt much the same way. Using the money they had pillaged from the North, they partook of strong drink and woman. Yomas and Nogi alerted the Citadel command of the immenent attack by Tol. When Tol and his army came upon the battlefield in front of Jorhat Citadel, they found a army ready and waiting. The entire army was wiped out although Tol managed to escape. Yomas was named captain of the guard after Nogi declined the position, prefering to step into the background for a while. Yomas, petitioned the lords of the Citadel, and soon Nogi found himself in the position of weapons trainer for a large contingent of the Citadel's men. Much to his suprise, he also began to recieve callers looking for training under his expert tutelage. Nogi set up shop in the small house that had been his gift from the city for his actions against Tol.

Nogi lives comfortably within the Citadel travelingly rarely. He has thwarted several attempts by a vengeful Tol to take his life and has tried to hunt down the bothersome ogre on several occasions.

Allies:
Yomas Luur (human m; F12).
