Death Attack (Ex): After studying a victim for 3 rounds, Ebon's next sneak attack within 3 rounds can kill (or paralyze for 1d6+3 rounds) unless the victim makes a DC 16 Fortitude save.
Sneak Attack (Ex): +5d6 damage against a flat-footed or flanked foe, or one denied its Dexterity bonus.
Poison Use (Ex): Ebon never risks poisoning himself when applying poison to a blade.
Improved Uncanny Dodge (Ex): Ebon keeps his Dexterity bonus to AC when flat-footed and can't be flanked except by a rogue of 11th level or higher.
Two weapons: Against several foes Ebon fights with the swordstick in one hand and Venom in the other, as his 2e entry describes.
Blowgun: Not a core 3.5 weapon; uses house statistics (simple ranged, 1d2 piercing, range increment 10 ft.) and mainly delivers poison.

Assassin Spells Known (3/day 1st, 1/day 2nd; caster level 3rd; save DC 13 + spell level):
1st—disguise self, obscuring mist, true strike; 2nd—invisibility.

Venom: A +4 defender dagger. At the start of his turn Ebon can move any part of its +4 enhancement bonus to his Armor Class until his next turn. Vampiric: when Venom deals damage, Ebon heals hit points equal to half the damage dealt.
Swordstick: A +1 rapier concealed in a walking cane. Ebon gets +2 on Sleight of Hand checks to keep it hidden as an ordinary cane.

Possessions: Leather armor, Venom, +1 swordstick, blowgun with darts, thieves' tools, poisons (including his anti-vampire brews), scroll of protection from evil (for the 2e protection from undead scroll), 3 potions of cure light wounds.

Conversion notes (how conversions are made):

  • His 2e Thief 8 with the Assassin kit becomes Rogue 5/Assassin 3; 5th level is the earliest he can enter the prestige class.
  • Leather armor is assumed. His 2e AC 18 and movement 15 are kept as originally written.
  • Weapon of choice and expertise with the swordstick become Weapon Finesse and Weapon Focus (rapier); his ambidexterity becomes Two-Weapon Fighting.
  • Venom's vampiric power has no 2e description, so its healing effect is new to this conversion.
  • The blowgun isn't a core 3.5 weapon and uses house statistics. His 2e protection from undead scroll becomes protection from evil.

Sneak Attack (1/Turn): Ebon deals an extra 14 (4d6) damage when he hits with a finesse or ranged weapon and has advantage, or when an ally is within 5 feet of the target.
Assassinate: Ebon has advantage on attacks against any creature that hasn't taken a turn in the combat yet, and any hit he scores against a surprised creature is a critical hit.
Cunning Action: Ebon can Dash, Disengage or Hide as a bonus action.
Uncanny Dodge: When an attacker he can see hits him, Ebon can use his reaction to halve the damage.
Evasion: When an effect lets him make a Dexterity save for half damage, Ebon takes no damage on a success and half on a failure.
Poisoner: Ebon's poisons ignore resistance to poison damage, and he can coat a weapon or piece of ammunition as a bonus action. With an hour's work and his poisoner's kit he brews a dose of potent poison: a creature hit must make a DC 14 Constitution save or take 2d8 poison damage and be poisoned until the end of Ebon's next turn.
Expertise: Deception, Perception, Stealth and thieves' tools (included above).

Actions
Swordstick (+1 Rapier): Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d8+5) piercing damage.
Venom (Dagger): Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d4+6) piercing damage.
Blowgun: Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit (not proficient), range 25/100 ft., one target. Hit: 1 piercing damage, plus the effect of any poison on the needle.

Venom (weapon (dagger), very rare, requires attunement): You have a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic dagger. At the start of your turn, you can move some or all of that bonus to your Armor Class until the start of your next turn. Once per turn, when you hit a creature that isn't a construct or undead with it, you regain hit points equal to half the piercing damage dealt.
Swordstick: A +1 rapier hidden in a walking cane; an observer needs a successful DC 15 Wisdom (Perception) check to notice the cane is a weapon.

Possessions: Leather armor, Venom, swordstick, blowgun with needles, thieves' tools, disguise kit, poisoner's kit, poisons (including his anti-vampire brews), scroll of protection from undead, 3 potions of healing.

Conversion notes (how conversions are made):

  • Rogue (Assassin), Criminal background, variant human with the Poisoner feat (Tasha's Cauldron of Everything) for his poison work.
  • Venom becomes a +2 very rare dagger, since 5e has no +4 weapons. Its defender power follows the standard item; its vampiric power is new to this conversion.
  • The blowgun is a martial weapon in 5e, and he isn't proficient with it.

Appearance: Ebon is a tall man in his late twenties. He has fine black hair that lays flat against his scalp and is cut to shoulder length. He has pale green eyes and wears a small goatee trimmed neatly with no moustache. He has a deep penetrating gaze that gives most people the chills. His eyes are slightly sunken into his skull from his recent trials. He facial features are very wolf-like and his grin is chilling to behold. He prefers to wear dark clothing that allows him to meld into the shadows with ease. On those rare occasions were his disguise calls fro brighter colors, he will always have a reversible cloak.

Personality: Ebon was once a heartless, efficient assassin. These days however he is plagued by memories of his recent past and he has become quite obsessive about the extermination of vampires. He has a sense of professionalism about him and will not go back on a contract. He is cautious and weary when first encountered and rarely opens himself to anyone. He is a drifter and obtains work by reputation.

Combat: Ebon is versed in several weapons but when push coes to shove, he tends to meld into the shadows and seek cover. He does not prefer to meet challenges head on in combat, prefering to use stealth and poison. Despite his distaste for close cobat, Ebon has trained himself well in the use of his cane which holds a rapier-like blade within. Although he does not normally do so, Ebon has been known to use the cane like a second weapon when faced against multiple foes.

History: Ebon Drekenridge had no name at birth. He was a Waterdeep street urchin who was picked up by a small thiieves guild. An elderly rogue within the ranks, Marchak took pity on the boy and trained him to survive on the streets. He was a runner for the guild and was quickly dubbed Ferret for his uncanny ability to move quickly and quitely through an area. He was always small for his age, He learned the use of the blade at age twelve to protect himself from the thugs of the guild. In time, Marchak, his mentor advanced to a strong position as second in command of the small guild and he saw to it that Ferret was selected for training as an assasin. Girth, the guilds resident assasin saw to the boys training. He saw the potential for the young boy in his intelligence and boyish good looks. He used those tools and began training him in the arts of death. He learned anatomy, alchemy and poisons from the guild wizard and was soon taking missions of his own.

Ferret was sent on several insignificant assasinations for the guild; each of which met with success. His greatest accomplishment in his younger years was the infiltration of the noble house of Polochenc. He had befriended the young boy in the mansion gaining his confidence and friendship. The trusting fools of the household died to the poison that Ferret had left in their water supply. The entire household was wiped out. Unfortunately for Ferret, this total annihilation of the family brought down serious heat upon the guild. He was tipped off by his Marchak that the guild intended to turn the boy over to the authorities in exchange for their immunity. Ferret fled Waterdeep, dodging the Watch and the guild. He travelled North along the coast and eventually arrived in Luskan.

Along the way, Ferret befriended an old winemaker by the name of Ebeneezer Drekenridge. The man was kind to Ferret and took him in as he travelled along the Swordcoast. He taught the Ferret the finer points of winemaking and provided the him with his future means of disguise and travel. When the solitary wine cart pulled into Luskan, Ferret, now under the guise of Ebon Drekenridge was at the reins. The old man was nowhere to be found. Ebon made a small life for himself in Luskan setting himself up as a supplier of poisons to several guilds. On the side, his wines seemd to sell equally well. He collected a great deal of gold and items from his small business. He was contemplating moving on to the next city when he was approached by a tall man who called himself Chromass. Chromass had heard of Ebon through the underworld contacts and wished him to make contact with a group of adventurers that were passing through town and join them. He was to protect Chromass' interests within the group.

Ebon made contact with the group and joined a small group of adventurers that included Valas, Calador, Brother Orocrin and several others. Ebon blended well with the group and secured his position within the group. They travelled across the sea to a distant land. The group entered and ancient tomb in search of an item that had been stolen from a local kingdom. Ebon, with special instructions from Chromass was also on the lookout for a special item. He found the small emerald vase among the crypts of the dungeon and concealed it before the oters were wise to him. Before leaving the dungeon, Ebon betrayed the small group to a blue dragon and fled for his life. He met with Chromass and delivered the item. Chromass however was not finished with the assasin and so made a deal with him. He asked one year of sevice in exchange for a powerful item. Ebon was intrigued and agreed to the arrangement. Chromass, ever the manipulator transformed Ebon into a vampire. A state that Ebon grew to despise. He fufilled his obligation to Chromass, for it was the only way that he had a chance of returning to normal. He commited mass murders and acts of destructionin his year of indenture to Chromass. At the end of the year however, Chromass made good on his word and returned Ebon to his natural state and gave him the dagger known as Venom.

Ebon left Chromass without a word secretly swearing to one day return and kill the loathsome wizard. His mental trauna from living the life of a vampire had major effects upon his poersonality and he soon became obsessed with killing the creatures of the night in a vain attempt to purge the memories from his mind. He has developed several poisons that are effective against the bloodsuckers. Some taht are injected into the victims but only one that can be directly given to a vampire. He now travels the Realms under the guise of Ebon Drekenridge the winemaker hunting the undead.
