Tattoos: Rules & Spells

Yoriman sat and contemplated the touching story he had just heard. This young warrior and his lover had ventured into the hell of the Abyss in search of glory. She met her end and he escaped with his life. His heart poured out for her, Yoriman could sense that, he knew that his mans grief was eternal, he knew that this strong emotion could help him forge a new tattoo. He shifted forward in his chair "I think I may be able to help you" he said with an anxious grin.

Rules:
Tattoos can enhance a characters abilities or grant them powers that they normally would not have. Tattoos are divided into three main categories; permanent, charged and temporary. Permanent tattoos are just that, permanent. They can only be removed with the spell Remove Tattoo, known only to high level Inkslingers. These tattoos can have constant or invoked effects. For instance, a constant power might be a permanent +1 to strength. An invoked ability might be the power to cast magic missle once per day. The use of tattoos is considered an innate ability. They have no speed factor and may be invoked at will. Tattoos that duplicate a spell such as magic missle require that the character take an action to aim the spell. Tattoos that duplicate a spell such as bless are considered free actions and do not count against the allowed attacks per round.

Charged tattoos are probably the most powerful of all the tattoos. They can offer bonuses to multiple attributes and grant extra powers to the cutter wearing them. They have limited charges that are based upon the level of the caster and fade after the charges have been expired.

The third type of tattoo is the temporary tattoo. These tattoos are temporary in the sense that they will wear off, they last for approximately 2d4+1 days when using the proper inks. These tattoos are much cheaper than the permanent versions and are good for when a sod is expecting trouble.

No matter what type of tattoo a sod is wearing, they may never have more than three at any given time. Attempts to apply more tattoos simply yield failed results. The new tattoos are completely inert and are as mundane as any normal tattoo.

In addition to being a mage, all Inkslingers are artists. All Inslingers must have the artist proficiency (general; base 5, cost 3cp or 2 slots Dex-4).

Spells:
There is only one spell that is required for applying tattoos. Much of the power of this art is derived from the special symbols used for each power. The inherent magic of the symbols and the artistic skill of the Inkslinger has as much to do with the power of the tattoo as the spells that are used in the casting.

Tattoo - revised
Level: 2
School: Alteration
Casting Time: 1 turn
Duration: By symbol
Range: Touch
Area of Effect: Creature Touched
Components: V, S, M
Saving Throw: None

Effects:
This spell allows the creation of enchanted tattoos. The exact nature of the tattoo is determined by the symbol inscribed. Only one tattoo is created by this spell, although multiple applications are possible. Several restrictions limit the number and type of magical tattoos that an individual can bear. An individual cannot have more then three enchanted tattoos, and none of these can be of the same type. Although different tattoos that add bonuses to the same attribute will stack.

Remove Tattoo
Level: 4
School: Alteration
Casting Time: 1 turn
Duration: Permanent
Range: Touch
Area of Effect: Creature Touched
Components: V, S, M
Saving Throw: Negates

Effects:
This spell can be used to remove tattoos. Why remove tattoos? Occassionally a sod will find himself in the brink and them lawmakers don't like their prisoners having a hidden arsenal tattooed on their bodies. The other reason would be to upgrade to better more powerful tattoos. Unfortunately, tattoos have a stong essence and make saves vs. removal as if they were a 10th level mage.
